side exit exhaust

has anyone seen/done a side exit exhaust on a vr4?or any 3000gt? unless there is some kind of unforeseen complications, i dont see why noone does this. it would be WAY less expensive than some of the pre-made cat back kits.could you not just have a y shaped pipe made to fit the cat, then run piping out the side in front of the wheels?

Re: side exit exhaust?

u can, i dont think there r any problems, but the rear bumpers have the slots for the tips to go through an personally i wouldnt leave those open. also it might be wise considering how low the car is, to get a sideskirt that has the holes cut out, ive seen a kit smewhere where they did that and the rear bumper was even at the bottom, it actually looked good but not my taste unless it muscle but hey go for it

Re: side exit exhaust?

Wont work with a side skirt cut out.

Wont work period because of clearances and the way the law is written the exhaust cannot exit under the passenger compartment.

Re: side exit exhaust?

In all 50 states the exhaust must exit behind the passenger compartment.

When you see Vettes with side exit exhaust its legal because the Vette is a 2 seater and the exhaust is behind the passenger compartment.

Re: side exit exhaust?

bummer. what about mufflers? is it illegal to go muffler-less (maybe just a resonator)?

Re: side exit exhaust?

A resonator is not a muffler.

Re: side exit exhaust?

Buy some block off plates from one of the 3s vendors and its basically as simple as putting the plates where they match up with on a VR4.

If you have a 91-93 you wont have any other issues.
If you have a 94 or 95 you will have to wire in a resistor to prevent a check engine light.
If you have a 96+ well, you're screwed.
