Raw gas in exhaust

My son has a 93 Concorde 3.3. The issue started occurring a couple of weeks ago while driving home from work. It started to run real rough and he had a bad gas odor inside the car. He burned thru a 1/2 tank in about 20 miles. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and it started and ran fine. So we took it up to a local parts store to get a new heater core. When he started it up to go home, the car started doing the same thing as before. I noticed a huge amount of smoke coming from the car, and it was dripping gasoline from the exhaust. The engine check light is intermittent when this is occurring. I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Unable to get the code read due to the age of the car so I have no idea what the code is that is getting set. Thanks.

Re: Raw gas in exhaust

I would check to make sure there is spark first. If you dont have spark then the fuel wont burn and will be pushed out the exhaust. If you got good spark at the spark plugs i would check the fuel side. If you have a fuel injector(s) stuck open it will be spraying fuel when it shouldnt be. With the vehicle misfiring the check engine light will come on. The following link tells how to retrieve the codes.- http://www.freeautomechanic.com/diag...blecodes8.html

Check the car for codes, see if it is throwing an O2 sensor code, you may have one reading lean or not working at all and causing the engine to go extremely rich.

The fuel odor is also a concern, you may have a leaky injector seal that may need replaced.

Re: Raw gas in exhaust

Thanks for the reply folks. It does have spark as it runs, badly. It is also hard starting as well due to getting too much gas. The codes I was able to get indicated fuel injector and O2 sensor. The sensor code is probably due to the excessive amount of fuel getting thru to the exhaust. I will be checking the fuel injectors this week to see if they are clicking on & off. For the amount of fuel coming out the exhaust I am leaning toward a malfunction in the PCM. This issue is occurring whether the engine is cold or at operating temp. I've checked the wiring and everything appears tight, and I've swapped out the ASD relay with no change.

Re: Raw gas in exhaust

Well, I checked the fuel injectors last night, and they sound like they are all operating fine. I'm doubting the injectors as the car ran fine for about 30 minutes on Sunday and then started acting up again. So I am going to look at the PCM. Does anyone know if you can remove the PCM and take it somewhere to have it tested? Thanks again for the help.

Re: Raw gas in exhaust

Well, I ended up having it towed in. I figured out there was an issue with a fuel injector but wanted it confirmed before I jumped into it. It turned out that an O2 sensor was stuck open causing the engine to run rich. Also, the ECM had grounded out causing the #4 fuel injector to run wide open just dumping gas into the cylinder. SO, between the ECM and the O2 sensor, the engine was being overly flooded with gas. The plugs have to be changed and the oil chnaged due to the excessinve gas. At least now, my son will have a car.
