soft brake pedel

hope someone can help out with this. had new tires put on 98 k1500 couple days ago and of course they tried selling a brake job. i knew the brakes were needing replacement. got home pulled off wheel and removed rear drums. front pads are shot. rear shoes look like new. and when i say look like new i mean new. the drums dont have enough wear on them to even catch your finger nail on. bought pickup new and brakes have never been touched. pickup has 89000 miles. ive also noticed lately that the first time or two you press the pedel there is hardly any brakes. pedel goes way down. after using brakes a couple times the pedel feels ok. i know the rears dont do that much braking but there should be more wear than that. i wonder if they are doing any good. ive notice the last couple years towing camper that i can never seem to get the trailer brakes adjusted correctly, i always have to be changing adjustment. im thinking this could have something to do with maybe the pickup brakes arnt working the same all the time. sorry for the long story. in short. does anybody have a reason for almost no wear on rear brakes and why the spongy pedel? pickup does sit several months without use, primarily used to pull camper last couple years. thanks in advance. by the way, does anybody know if gm used 4:10 axles in half ton 4x4 in 98, i want to do a gear change, if i could find used axles i would. othewise, i guess ill be puttin in ring and pinions.

Re: soft brake pedel

I have owned my 90 GMC K1500 since new. Basically the same brakes as your 98. I manually adjust the brakes every time I rotate the tires. The self adjusters only work in reverse and they really to not adjust well enough.

Does you emergency brake go to the floor? Another sign that the rears are not adjusted properly.

Here is how I adjust the rears. Remove wheels. Rotate the drum in the forward direction. You should feel a slight drag. If they need adjusting, pull the drum and turn the adjust wheel a few clicks. Repeat until you feel a slight drag on the drums while turning in the forward direction.
