car dies at stop lights

My car sometimes dies at stop lights. For the record it's only been twice. It's an 03 cavalier 2.2l ecotec. Before it dies it ends up dying it sounds very quiet and doesn't seem like it's running under full power. I've been told it could be the mass airflow sensor, any ideas?

Re: car dies at stop lights

There is no MAF sensor on any cavalier, so that's not gonna be the problem. Does it start to buck/chug as it dies? Sometimes the torque converter clutch will stay engaged (assuming it's an automatic) and kill the engine. How many miles on it and how does the transmission fluid look and smell?(also assuming A/T) Check for any codes and post them here. Check the fuel pressure. Something that happens this infrequently is probably going to be hard to find until it can be easily replicated while testing.

Re: car dies at stop lights

It kind of bucks but it doesn't noticeably bad. Just a couple of tick marks above 500rpm and it never goes above 1000rpm. It idles at 500rpm. It has 94,000 miles and I'm pretty unsure about the transmission fluid. I had a Haynes and it told me I didn't have to replace the automatic transmission fluid unless the gears were slipping but I'll check that next. It's running fine for the most part now even though I just got my ass kicked by a 04 cobra with a ram air system and some cats...I doubt this problem is the reason I lost but for my ego's sake will say it is .

Re: car dies at stop lights

Probably not the TCC then, it'll usually jerk the whole car from 300 down to 0 RPM. Check that trans fluid anyway tho... should be flushed (not just a pan drop 'n' fill) every 30-50k miles, especially if you're racing in it (and he probably only won because of the ram air ). If the trans starts to slip, the damage is done by then, and then you're in for a few thousand dollars for a rebuilt transmission. IMO, much better to spend $150-200 every 30-50k than to spend a few thousand at 150-200k

Re: car dies at stop lights

That's what I've been saying lol, I did keep up with him and my shit's all stock. Haynes manuals are pieces of shit btw, but yeah thanks I'll definately get to changing the tranny fluid soon; hopefully it works out.
