95 Dodge Caravan Grinding Noise
I have a 95 Dodge Caravan I replaced the driver side (short) CV Axle about a month ago I also had it aligned and the Transmission serviced. Just recently it started making a grinding sound on the passenger side of transmission only when in gear with brake on not sure if it is trans or something else can someone help me?

How many miles on vehicle? Which engine? 3 or 4 speed tranny? Would you try to explain with more detail?? WHen you mean passenger side of tranny do you mean where tranny mates to the engine or where the half shaft comes out of the transaxle??? Does it grind sitting still or moving??? Why did you replace driver side Halfshaft (was it clicking or was the boot torn and spreading grease) What ever you can tell will help us help you. Couple things come to mind, cracked flywheel or loose spider gear retainer pin in transaxle that will grind on the transaxle housing when driving and will ruin the transaxle housing. What does the tranny fluid look like in color or does it smell burnt?? |

Re: 95 Dodge Caravan Grinding Noise
It has 125,000 miles, transmission has 40,000 miles. It is a 3.0 liter engine. I replaced driverside shaft for a broke inner boot. It only grinds when the vehicle is in gear with the the vehicle stopped. It only sounds like it is grinding on the long shaft at the transmission but the shaft doesn't turn when brake is applied. Three speed Transmission and the tranny fluid looks new and clean on the dipstick. Fluid and filter replaced one month ago when trans was serviced. No accidents or damage to vehicle the only other thing that was done was it was aligned and new tires. And I mean the passenger side of the tranny where the axle shaft goes into trans.

I can not imagine what would be turning to create the grinding noise except for internal tranny compotents if a Front wheel drive van. Have you checked the motor and tranny mounts? If they are bad and engine is out of align this will cause problems with the front halfshafts. |
