Question 1999 GA starts then shuts off? BCM? Passlock?

First off, its a 99 Grand Am 2.4l SE, auto, 70,000 miles.

ive read and read posts about the passlock and bcm making the car do what mine is doing.

It just starts then shuts off and a second or two later the security lights comes on. I assumed this was the passlock, so i replaced the lock cylinder (which had a new passlock sensor) and tried the relearn process of starting the car, letting it die, then leaving it for 10 minutes and the security light never went off, or flashed or anything.

Next i replaced the BCM (with a used bcm, came out of the same year/model car and has same part number) and did the relearn process stated above, and again, nothing. security light stayed on.

What next?

Or am i doing the relearn process wrong?

Re: 1999 GA starts then shuts off? BCM? Passlock?

Welcome to AF !

This problem could be somthing other then Pk2 or BCM problems.

Did you check that its getting spark and fuel before replacing those expensive components ?
DO you hear the fuel pump run when key is on ?
Have you replaced the fuel filter or checked your fuel pressure ?
And have you checked all the fuses related to ignition system and problems at hand?

The relearn you mentioned above, isnt quiet right. Here is how that goes;
Quote:
Security relearn procedure:

1) Attempt to start the car by turning the key to the Start/Run Position.
2) Observe that the vehicle fails to start and that the security light is illuminated.
3) Release key to the 'ON/Accessory' Position. (DO NOT turn key to the 'off' position.)
4) Allow the vehicle to sit with the key in the 'ON/Accessory' Position for no less than 11 minutes.
5) Turn key to off position and allow the vehicle to remain in the 'OFF' position for no less than 30 seconds.
6) Repeat #1 - #5 for 3 cycles.
7) On 4th attempt, car should start.

NOTE : Since this is a fairly long procedure, I would limit all electrical sources, such as disconnecting headlights, to prevent discharge of battery.

NOTE 2 : It is SAFE to wait LONGER than the allotted time, but it is not safe to wait less time. I.e. 12 minutes instead of 11 minutes should be safe; however, waiting 10 minutes instead of 11 minutes is not safe.

Properly executed, this procedure should take approximately 35 minutes
You cant do the relearn on the BCM with out a tech II softwares, here's that procedure if you had access to the Tech II scan tool;
Quote:
SETUP NEW BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM)

TOOLS REQUIRED
Scan Tool (Tech 2)

IMPORTANT:

Read this procedure carefully and completely.
The BCM will not function properly if the Setup New BCM procedure is not performed.
Perform the Theft Deterrent Re-learn procedure after successfully finishing the Setup New BCM procedure. If the Theft Deterrent Re-learn procedure is not performed after a BCM replacement, the following conditions may occur:
The vehicle will not be protected against theft by the PASSLOCK system.
The engine will not crank nor start.
Connect a Scan Tool (Tech 2) to the Data Link Connector (DLC) .
Turn the ignition switch on.
Select Diagnostics and input all of the required data when prompted by the Scan Tool (Tech 2).
Select BODY CONTROL MODULE.
Select SPECIAL FUNCTIONS.
Select New VIN and input all required data.
Exit back to the SPECIAL FUNCTIONS menu.
Select BCM REPROGRAMMING.
The scan tool will display DO YOU WANT TO SETUP A BODY CONTROL MODULE? At the prompt, select SETUP BCM hotspot on the scan tool.
The scan tool will display: NOW SETTING UP THE NEW BODY CONTROL MODULE.
When the BCM has been setup successfully, the scan tool will display: BODY CONTROL MODULE SETUP IS COMPLETE.
When the BCM Setup Procedure and VIN have been entered, proceed with the Theft Deterrent Re-learn procedure. NOTE: After the above procedure has been completed, personalization of the BCM defaults to a default setting. Inform the customer that the personalization settings must be set again.
Id give the security relearn a try, see if that helps, if not let us know.

Re: 1999 GA starts then shuts off? BCM? Passlock?

Well i tried the security relearn process that you posted above on the new bcm and the old one just to see and neither worked.

The fuel pump and delivery seem fine, pressure is fine, and its getting spark.

Some of my symptoms (i forgot to post in the first post) are the power door locks arent working, the dome light isnt working, the day time running lights arent working/coming on. All which are what i thought would be cause of the BCM, but i may be wrong.

I dont have access to the Tech II tool myself, but I may know someone that does, ill try the programming the bcm thing unless someone has any other suggestions on what to check...?

Thanks for the reply/help. I appreciate it.

Re: 1999 GA starts then shuts off? BCM? Passlock?

Ok the top procedure is just the security relearn used when you install a new pcm or ignition switch. The Second was only for a new/used BCM.

If you are getting fuel and the injectors are firing, and youre getting spark then its not a passlock or BCM problem IMO.

But with those other problems youre having on your DRLs, interior lighting your BCM could be bad. If it is, it would throw a DTC specific to the BCM funtion, ie. communictions error with PZM or BCM.

First Id find out WHY the BCM is burnt, if it is bad.
Thier are several leak areas on this model GA, sunroof drains are the typical BCM nad fuse box killer. Water runs down the pillars onto the fuse box(s) and shorts the BCM or burns out the fuse box(s).

Unless you have successfully flashed a used BCM, I don't believe it can be done. When we got our Tech-2, the company sent out a training guy who said that GM only allows one setup for every module. He said it was to make them useless to thieves. I think GM just wanted to sell more parts.

Re: 1999 GA starts then shuts off? BCM? Passlock?

Ive got a used one in my GAGT, works fine. The car had exactly the same year and options, power windows, power seats, cd w/tape below, it was realy hard to find a match.
