Re: f-250 tranmission
I'll try to keep this as simple as possible so as not to confuse anyone or get myself confused while trying to explain it...
In automatic transmissions you have what is called a planetary gear set, in the center there is a big gear called a "sun" gear, rotating (meshed) around it are 3 (or more) little "planet" gears that are placed inside a carrier, around the planet gears there is a large "ring" gear with the teeth on the inside of the ring that meshes with the planet gears. By changing which parts are held still and which parts have power from the engine applied to them you get different gear ratios (gears) and reverse which makes the vehicle move, in automotive transmissions two of these planetary gear sets are hooked together to provide 1st, 2rd, 3rd, and reverse gears (some other things are done to provide overdrive), what 3rd gear and reverse gears have in common is that they both share one of the sun gears. The shop will probably tell you that either a gear inside the transmission was broken or all of the teeth were stripped off of it, those are my two guesses. |

Hi me again well to keep it simple you are Absolutely right the transmission stripped the gear it is being rebuilt as we speak thank for the explaination you should have seen the tranmission specialist face when I told him half way through his speach what it was and to just fix it........He asked me to marry him LOL I had to decline there are laws against having 2 husbands!! Thanks for keeping me informed on this! OH and is this a common problems with Fords I had to put a transmission in my Explorer I used to have too???
