Re: 5.0 Build

Balancing and blueprinting the engine along with a new higher lift-longer duration camshaft would be the way to go. It will have to have new lifters installed with it. I've found that it doesn't do any good at all to put on a bigger carburetor, bigger intake and headers and keep the stock camshaft. You won't get any more power and you'll get a lot less mpg. Put a decent cam into it and keep the rest stock. . Of course, if money is no object bolt a turbocharger onto it. You will have to lower the compression ratio on it with different pistons or by head gaskets. A turbo will double your power with enough boost.

Re: 5.0 Build

There are lots of 350hp 302s out there with heads and a cam. I would use a proven combo though for best results

I have a 95 5.0 in my Panoz GT race car. It was stock when I got the car and had 200 RWHP and 260 RWFTLB's on Dynojet Dyno.

I did the following to the engine;
- stripped off the injection,
- enlarged the valve reliefs in the top of the factory pistons,
- fitted a 224 / 232 deg @ .050 lift duration Comp Cams cam,
- fitted Brodix CNC ported 185 cc runner heads,
- fitted Comp Cams roller lifters,
- fitted an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake port matched to the heads,
- fitted a 650 CFM BG Mighty Demon carb,
- fitted an MSD dizzy and 6AL2 spark box,
- fabricated a custom set of tuned length 4 into 1 1 3/4" primary pipes running into 3" collectors and into a 4" single exhaust.

Engine made 340 RWHP and 335RWFTLB's after these mods. Peak power at 5700rpm and peak torque at 4600rpm. Was tested on the same Dynojet after mods as before. I think this is pretty good Hp for a stock bottom ended engine running (marginally) 9 : 1 compression.

I have just raced the car in a 6 hour endurance race and the engine performed faultlessly running to 5800 rpm all day.

Have fun doing that engine up!!
