ABS fustrations

1995 Pontiac Grand Am
V6 3.1L Automatic Trans., 175,000 miles

For the past two years I have been having this problem:
As soon as the car gets over about 10mph, the ABS light comes on and I have no ABS (sometimes no brakes at all!!). This happens most of the time. Other times, the ABS light won't come on for days. Then, one day I will make a sharp turn or back up sharply and the light comes on again (No ABS, sometimes no brakes at all again).

Mechanic 1:
He said the problem was that the wiring harnesses were corroded between the ABS unit and the front driver's side wheel speed sensor (near the sensor). To fix the problem, he simply used wire connectors and crimped them together. This worked great for about 6 months. Then I kept getting the same problem.

The passenger's side wiring harness had the same problem. I fixed this one myself. The problem went away for a about month.

Mechanic 2: Instead of repairing this time, he replaced both wiring harnesses with used ones from the salvage yard. The problem returned almost immediately.

Mechanic 3: Said the wiring was loose. Put wiring back together. Lasted for about two months.

Does anyone have any better ideas? Is there a way that I can get rid of the whole ABS system all together (maybe that would be easier)?

Re: ABS fustrations

It could be that both front wheel speed sensors are bad.
Did they ever check for trouble codes on the ABS system ??
If so do you know what they were?

If you're just needing the harness from the sensor plug back to the engine area , solder the wires and use a high quality heat shrink tubing!!
This should take care of it. The problem is the butt connectors usualy allow water to corrode the wires making it short out.

With the trouble code(s) were could tell if anything else could be causing the ABS light to trip.

Hope that helps!
