MAF and EGR maint question

I would like to remove and clean the Mass Airflow Sensor and the EGR valve and have two questions. Is the MAS the device directly after the air filter housing or the one thats in the air intake manifold{Whats the other one and does that need to be removed and cleaned also?). What
product(s) would you recomend to clean these devices? T.I.A.

Re: MAF and EGR maint question

The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is located in the air stream, typically just after the air filter box and before the throttle body. There is special cleaner for this, MAFS Cleaner by CRC. It is similar to electrical parts cleaner, but not supposed to attack the plastic. The other sensor I suspect you're thinking of is the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor. I don't believe you'll find one on the LS, and even if you did, you wouldn't want to clean it. If that is plugged, you have other issues.

The EGR cokes up with sludge. I typically use STP Throttle Body Cleaner to clean the EGR. It seems to cut through the carbon gunk quickly and evaporate well unlike some of the other products I've tried.

Re: MAF and EGR maint question

Shorod thanks for your speedy reply. I googeled some pictures of the egr and was wondering if this valve needs to be removed to be properly cleaned? I see the vacum and tubing attachment, is there a port on the bottom of the device that threads on. I will attempt this tomorow and any heads up on its removal (if nec) is much apreciated. Once again thank you for all your help in the past. I will post my findings as to how dirty these devices are after 5 years of service T.I.A.

Re: MAF and EGR maint question

Yes, to clean it you will need to remove it. You'll need to loosen the larger connection at the metal exhaust tube, remove the vacuum line, then remove the two 10mm bolts. Be careful not to lose the metallic gasket that fits between the valve and the manifold when removing the 10mm bolts. Once you get the valve removed, it will be obvious where to clean.
