2000 Malibu axel wobbles - fixabel?

2000 Chevy Malibu,
Driver side axel wobbles at transmission to the point where its scraping the housing and making noise. Also so bad it blew the seal.

Is this something that can be fixed?

It is probably an internal transmision problem. I bet if you pulled the axle out the splined portion it fits into is loose. That bearing is probably wiped out and I think you have to tear the trans down a bit to change it.

in other words, rebuild transmission?

at the least, remove transmission, pull it apart to get at the bearing and replace it.

your prognosis sounds about right due to the fact he (my son) has been driving the car with a bad tranny fluid leak from one of the lines for a month or so. The bearing could have blown due to lack of fluid?

Thansk fo rthe reply.
