oil. . . too many choices!
i have a 91 vr4, lightly modded with just under 60k. what kind of oil should i be using? does it matter?

anything full sythentic will be fine, try adding some lucas oil treatment to it, it wont hurt to be safe. fram filters r my fav to, but its all the same basically. unless u have a drag car

DO NOT EVER USE LUCAS OIL TREATMENT!!!!!! That stuff is such a scam all it will do for you is stick to the sides of the cylinder walls and decrease your clearances only to make stuck break or just run shitty. For oil filters i would just do your standard penzoil or something similar. And for oils i dont like to use synthetic but it doesnt hurt at all to use it. What i do is use 5w-30 in the winter and 10w-30 in the summer. And if you choose to go synthetic go with 10w-30 cuz the 5w-30 will be too thin. Just as a warning if you see 10w-40 DO NOT buy it!! It will ruin your engine

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me how 10w40 will ruin your engine?
I run 10w40 in the winter and 20w50 in the warmer months with ZERO ill effects.

is the weight that important? i live in monterey, so its a pretty even 65 almost all the time. never very hot or cold. whats a good weight, or does it matter? and also, is everyone pretty much in agreement that lucas' is a bad buy? ive never even heard of it

ok sorry i guess i put it wrong what i was sayin was ive known and heard only bad things about the 10w-40. Im glad that it works for you tho. Ive just never heard of anyone using 10w-40 for a long time. i didnt mean to offend you or anyone else i was giving my opinion.

Use the weight oil that the engine manufacturer recommends. The connecting rod bearings and crankshaft bearings do not ride directly on the crankshaft journals. There is a "cushion" of oil between the bearing and the journal. If you use heavier oil, it will not "fit" between the bearing and the journal as easily as a thinner oil. Yes using heavier oil will increase oil pressure, only because it's too thick to fit easily between the bearings and journals, as a result, it's not getting into where it needs to be.

for turbo cars you generally want a heavier weight, synthetic oil.
I use Mobil 1 15w50...Quite a few VR4/TT owners use it and i have never heard of anyone spinning a bearing on it. |

This is an interesting topic.A buddy and I were discusing this the other day. I like Mobil 1 but recently was looking at charts and things like that. Amsoil came out on top with its specs for Viscosity, Flash, and pour. I've never really even heard of Amsoil but the guy prior to me ran only that oil. My last car had a pretty noticable lifter tap. With this car I hardly hear anything. I don't know if its the oil or just the car is in better shape but I don't know if I want to take the risk of using a different oil.
As far as oil filters I will never use Fram filters again. I used them 2 times on my other car both times I had seeping around the filter and on it. I only use factory filters now and have no problem at all. Other then noticing how the oil caps tend to leak. |

The builder showed his what happened and he never ran oil thinner thatn 10w40 again. Jeeny I'd like to know who told you 10W40 was no good for long term use. Its a weight of oil, its still oil. It just doesnt make any sense how someone can think one certain weight that is an in between weight is bad when 10w30, 15w50, etc are all ok.

i have been using frams since i have had the car...but reading what everyone has said i'll switch to puralator
i remember this topic coming up years ago...and i think it was 2Old that linked in a good site to help you choose which oil to use. something like...bobistheoilguy.com if i remember right. Anyways, liek Stealthee said, there's nothing wrong with 10-40. Your engine and driving conditions are what should be the deciding factor for which oil to use. EDIT: Hey! does anyone on here use/have experience using royal purple? ive heard alot of good things about it, but mostly from honda owners and other NA smaller engine applications. how is it on our cars?
