171/174 on 2000 Windstar

I have been reading about this problem and I think I have it. Does this problem cause the outside of the intake to be covered in oil? Mine is covered and I also smell coolant but I can't find a coolant leak.Can I just fill that hole in the valve cover? Thanks to everyone on this site for all the info.
