Question stability system

i have a 2000 buick lesabre. while i was driving on a dry straight road the "stability system active "light came on . The car was also making a noise almost like brakes locking . I pulled over and shut the car off and restarted. I had no more problem on my 8 mile drive home. Should i worry? It just sounded so bad. any info would be great. thanks maureen

I am not an expert on ABS systems but it sounds like one of the wheels was being braked like the stability system does to correct a spin or to attempt to help the car around a curve when the sensors tells Stabilitrak that the car isn't turning. I assume you didn't hit a bump or something that might have confused the sensors.

The pulsing is the ABS system braking on one wheel just the same as if you slide on snow or ice or on slick pavement in rain while braking. But there usually multiple wheels will have brake pulsing to try to keep the wheel slowing the car at maximum amount.

Because it happened while you were driving, I would suggest having it checked by asking at your friendly dealer. But if it's my own car I'd watch to see if it does it again. My own car was parked on a slant uphill and sideways at a garden center and I started out on the street and one wheel was giving a buzz that was braking applied. I went a part of a block and turned car off and restarted and everything was okay. It's not done that again. I always figured it was the sensor had sat cocked sideways and didn't work right after I started driving.

Other people occasionally have a Service Stability System message on the DIC that may be related to the sensor for the steering wheel position and movement or to one of the wheel sensors. My steering wheel sensor was replaced early under warranty.

Does your car have any other strange things happening electrically? My second thought is you might have a battery that's aging if it's on the original battery.
