Question 96 GA GT 3100 electrical??

I just bought this car and haven't torn into it yet, thought I'd look on here first and see if I could get any ideas. I'll list everything that's going on, maybe someone can see a connection:

has a power sunroof, doesn't work and leaks (not fully shut because its not working), floors have been flooded

air bag has deployed and radio controls on the steering wheel were pushed down but work

radio works but clock/station does not show up and the knobs on the stereo itself don't work, only the steering controls work

seat belt light is constantly on, dinger goes off for 10-20 secs then stops, till you apply the brakes, then starts again

I'm assuming there's a short somewhere either related to the airbag deployment tearing up the steering wheel or the water sitting on the floorboards. I'm not sure how much water leaked in or how often/how long it was there. If anyone has any ideas or knows where I can find a wiring diagram to help track down the connections/grounds that could be involved I would really appreciate it. Thanks!!

also, while the dinger is going i can hear the power locks clicking

Re: 96 GA GT 3100 electrical??

i believe but am not 100% sure that the control module for the airbags is located under the passenger seat.

wiring diagrams can be found in a manual bought at autozone for like $10.

also located in the seatbelt (where you lock it in) is (in most cars) a little switch that is pushed in when you belt up. water may have wrecked this and pushing the brake causing the dinging is telling you that your not belted when you really are.

the radio... might be electrical but id lean towards it being junk with all the water getting in there.

steering wheel controls can only be pushed so many times before they just dont click anymore .

altogether sounds like you have a long list of wiring to deal with. good luck

Re: 96 GA GT 3100 electrical??

1. for sunroof I would try jumping it to 12 volts near the sunroof motor just to close it until you find the problem (hope that your sunroof motor works and that there is problem with the swithc or open somewhere) if you can not there should be a way to mechanical close it and do not mess with it any more.
2. for radio just get another one after market one (original no one wants anyway)
3. grand am cars have problem with that plastic black grille that covers wiper mechanism, so remove that plastic grille clean the windshield and put some clear silicone at the edge of that plastic grille where it will seat against the windshield. that was one of the TSB's for this car.
4. for seat belt light and ringer do this: ignition swithc to run, and disconnect the seat belt swithc connector, if seat belt light turns off replace the swithc if not go to maintenance section on this forum find wire diagram for this car and inspect ckt238 for short to ground, if you do not find short to ground you will have to replace multifunction alarm module.

Re: 96 GA GT 3100 electrical??

Thanks for the info. So far we've only messed with the sunroof. The motor is working (it was unplugged), it will take it backward and forward but won't bring it down. It tries to, so it looks like the track or the arms are messed up. One of the arms was off track. There was a lot of crud in the track so might be built up somewhere. But we got it all the way down for now. I will definately try what you guys said and let you know. Oh and it looks like someone installed an aftermarket viper alarm system so thats probably where a lot of the problems stem from.

Re: 96 GA GT 3100 electrical??

your seatbelt light is most likely on because u need a new airbag control module (under passenger seat) sounds stupid right, thats what i thought, there is a service bulletin about water on the floor, when that module gets soaked it corrodes, pull the seat and cut the carpet away, careful not to cut wires, note: unhook the battery!!! , remove the three 10mm bolts holding down the module and look under it, most likely a wet jelly like substance under it and arround the connector. my airbag light started coming on about a month ago, couple days later the seatbelt light wouldnt shut off, googled for a while, checked my computer, toast, bought a new airbag control module from the junk yard, careful, dont buy one if the airbags in that vehicle have been deployed, installed it, left the carpet open on top so it wouldnt soak up more water later and ruin the new module, and to my amazement, no more airbag light, and the seatbelt light returned to normal operation, seams the airbag module controls the seatbelt light on the dash, i have a 96 gt with the 2.4, but have had to go through lots of issues, feel free to pm me in you would like @[email protected]

Re: 96 GA GT 3100 electrical??

Thanks for the info. We replaced the sunroof (works great now) and sprayed water down the drains and those aren't leaking. Also checked the windshield and didn't see any leaks there. We have also discovered that the locking mechanism on the shifter has been disabled, it can be shifted to or from any position without using the brake or the button. So someone has really screwed around with this car, and now we've got our hands full, lol! So now its on to figuring out the seat belt dinger (REALLY annoying) and the gas leak. Oh and where the water is coming from since its not the sunroof.
