2002 grand prix gt

hello all, a loud humming sound coming from the front end, sounds like the left side, starts at about 20 kph and gets higher in tone at higher speeds. Tends to go away when turning left. could it possibly be a wheel bearing?

Yes, it is most likely your left wheel bearing. I don't know the reasoning, but your supposed to replace wheel bearings in pairs. I've been doing some searching on the same problem on my cousin's 2000 Grand Prix. I'll be replacing her front hub/bearings in the next few days.

There is no need to replace hubs in pairs. If only one is bad, only change the bad one. Arbitrarily replacing parts is a waste of time and money. The reason a lot of people replace both is because once they replace the really noisy one, they can now hear the not as loud bad one.

Remember, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!

Unless it is a wheel sensor issue and/or you have proven the hub is bad for sure I think there is an exception on noisy hubs Rich. The steering test doesn't always work and you might wind up replacing the wrong one. Replacing the hubs in pairs is recommended but not mandatory.

Just to help in the diagnosis it is best to safely jack the front wheels up one at a time. With wheel off ground do the pull test on the wheel. Slop at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions would point to the hub. But then again both front hubs might have excess play.

To the OP how many miles or k's do you have on the car?
