97 Honda?

It takes a couple tries for my Honda to turn on..about 3-4 tries. Sometimes when I'm driving it just dies. I had the battery and the alternator checked and they were both fine. Any suggestions?

Re: 97 Honda?

I don't know what you mean when you say "turn on". Do you mean you have to turn the key to start the engine 4 times before it starts to crank? Or does it start cranking as soon as you turn the key to start but the engine does not start? In either case it could be an ignition switch. Or it could be other things. Tell us what you mean.

Re: 97 Honda?

It starts cranking when i turn the key. Sometimes it'll go on, on my first try, and sometimes I have to crank it multiple times before it starts. And when it does start sometimes it'll just go off....and when i am driving it will die off.

Re: 97 Honda?

The problem is either spark or fuel. The first thing to check is the spark side. (And, how old are the spark plugs?) Then look to the coil/igniter inside the distributor. You need some method to determine if you have spark. You could remove a wire and place it next some body metal and turn it over or use a timing light that will do the same thing. (You are not checking the timing, just looking to see if the light will trigger).

Re: 97 Honda?

Or it could be the ignition siwitch. I think there was a recall for that year.
