Engine honks after starting in cold weather

As strange as it may sound when I start my 2006 Silverado 5.3 in cold weather after it starts about 1 second theres a honk like sound that comes from the engine. And no it is not the actual horn honking. Any insight on this would be appreciated as the people at the dealerships around here are not the most reliable.

Thanx

Re: Engine honks after starting in cold weather

Mine lets out a loud "yelp" as I call it when its extremely cold right when I start it. Sounds like it's from somewhere around the powersteering pump area or might even be the pump itself. Mine does not do it very much..2-3times a winter maybe so I've never looked in too it that much. I'm pretty sure I've seen a few other guys on here that had some kind of noise consistent with cold weather when they started the truck.

Re: Engine honks after starting in cold weather

Im using 5W30 synthetic, as for temps as it gets colder around -20 to -30 celsius it gets louder and longer. As it warms up throughout the day it wont do it or very faintly and short.

since you are using the synthetic oil the noise is possibly coming from the starter....or the engine pulley/idler pulley sticking...

remove the belt and check that the idler works smoothly and is not worn..

the starter drive may be sticking when cold this will make a noise imediately after the starter is dis engaged..
