black exterior trim

'97 Buick Skylark
the black exterior trim is not looking good. the paint(?) is going, gone.
one shop just doesn/t mess with it.
the other said it can't be repainted - it has to be replaced.
but the side mirrors can be repainted.

they say its plastic, but it feels like metal - is it plastic covered metal? what can i do to get it back in shape?

there is a chemical called forever black that permenantly dyes trim black again. For the mirrors, there is a website that sells a kit to polish them back to like new condition. I will try to find it for you

someone else mentioned SEM prodcts and they look good too(just do a yahoo search).

i need to call a buick dealer and find out exactly what the trim is made of.
it doesn't seem to be pure rubber; probably a magnet would determine that. the parts that have lost the paint are silver shiny and 'mottled'; so i say metal, but i have two places saying plastic and i am goint to go to two more.

You can also go to an automotive supply store or an auto parts store and pick up a can of trim paint. A lot of body shops just mask, clean, and repaint the trim.

well i am getting ready to do this.
i have all the materials.
surveying the battlefield:-), i noticed that some of the trim is rubber.
i have Krylon int-ext paint which is labeled good for plastic and rubber.

this is a two door and the top of the window down to the underside of the mirror is plastic.
then the trim at the bottom of the window turns into rubber. the rear window trim is rubber.

i tried Back-to-Black on a small section of the rubber parts and it looks okay. but what about actually painting the rubber parts?
