98 Intrigue engine failure?

Ran low on coolant gagues read abt. 230 degrees, replenished fluids. Minutes later engine began ideling rough and then white exaust that smelled funny (not normal) then engine quit.
I tried to start it with no luck. Later I checked oil and it was really full, not sure of what.

Re: 98 Intrigue engine failure?

Sounds like you blew a head gasket. Not usually bad on parts, but expect at least 13 hours labor for the 3.8l and 24 hours labor for the 3.5l according to my labor guide. Do not start or try to start it as it is, it most likely has coolant in the oil. Coolant in the oil will ruin the bearings in no time at all, fully ruining the engine. Gasket set looks like it runs about $170. If you do the work yourself it would be worth it to have the heads checked while they are off. One may have cracked or warped due to the overheating.

Re: 98 Intrigue engine failure?

yep white exhaust and over filled oil means coolant is being burnt. Could be the UIM or headgasket. Dont try and start the engine, but for peace of mind if you are using DEXCOOL coolant (orange) its not nearly as hard on bearings when it gets in your oil as other types of coolants...
