1987 keeps stalling

My daughter has a 1987 Buick LaSabre with 77000 original miles. It stalls and then you can restart it The car might stall again right away or might go a block or more without stalling. Has new plugs and wires, new fuel regulator and filter. After the regulator ran ok for a little while but started it again. Took it to a garage and they said the car ran fine he recommened a garage with more computer info to check it out. It spent five days there and a mass air flow sensor was put on. Drove the car approx 15 miles, made 2 stops and then the car stalls again. Restarted, stalled restarted went a couple of miles stalled, restarted stalled did this about five times then he ran fine for approx 6 miles. Can someone give me an idea of what might be going on. We can not afford to fixing this car but she cannot afford a car payment. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Re: 1987 keeps stalling

I take it that there must be no check engine light or codes registering? I had a similar problem in an 87 Oldsmobile and it turned out the be a broken ground wire in the trunk. It was the oddest problem. I happened to notice the wire was broken where it connect to the ground bolt. Touched the wire to the metal and it ran fine. Another time, it registered a code that said it needed either an ignition module or a computer. I replaced the module and it turned out to be the computer, which was $99 for a remanufactured. It could be one of many different things. If you can check for codes, that might help. Also, I would check the fuel filter and fuel pressure. Does it put out a lot of black smoke, or is there any other symptoms that might give a hint as to what it might be? Does it stall when it has not warmed up, or is it only when it's hot?

Re: 1987 keeps stalling

It could also be your crank position sensor. You might need to take it to a dealer for diagnosis (or any garage with the proper scan tools/software.)

There is no way to diagnose it accurately as is without a scan.
