tps issues
88 cherekee, inline 6, 4.0
I was having high idle problems once in a while when i start it up it'll rev to about 3000rpm then slowly go back down i read that its a TPS going bad i ordered one online awhile back but never put it on because i wasn't mechanically inclined so i first read up on the adjustment precedure and then i wanted to read then reading on the tps i have in the car already so i got 3.72 as my input voltage on my old TPS and my output is supposed to be 82% of that which is 3.05 but my output voltage at 1st was 2.86 I assumed that #1 the input v. was to small and i tried to switch to the new TPS i had brought i check the voltage on the new TPS it was 4.96 input v. i check the output voltage on the new TPS and it was 6.0 or (higher) i then thought to adjust it i loosened the screws and the lowest i could get it to was 4.77 and this isnt correct 82% of 4.96 is 4.06 or 4.07 I then figured the $#!^ was busted and tried to put the old one back in since it was closer to the specifications but when i checked the voltage it was 3.72 input and output was not normal at all it was 4.9 or something like that but it wasn't in the specifications I started the car with the old one in despite the readings and boy was i disappointed the car idled to 3000rpm and stayed there until i unplug the three plug connector on the TPS it lowered the idle to normal (old trick i learned) but when i step on the gas it went up and stayed up as if it was sticking or something what going on? is there any way to fix a TPS really cant afford one with in the next 2 days and thats exactly when i need it im in NY alternate parking

Re: tps issues
Could also be tied in with the M.A.P sensor... I have actually dealt with that one before. Just a thought as this will cause the idle to remain high. It will go bad and read incorrectly, or can even just get stuck and cause the idle air control to stay wide open which is what causes the high idle and rev on starting. It is the same as around the same age GM so you should not have any problems finding it. As far as the MAP sensor itself, it is bolted to a metal plate on the firewall and a small plastic line runs to it from the intake. Also make sure the line is not cracked as it would make the sensor read wrong.

Re: tps issues
I am having the exact same problem with mine.. you should read the whole story in my first post. I recently replaced the Idle Air Control Motor because mine was stalling pretty bad when I would slow down to a stop.
I am thinking the issue is either something with a bad IAC (i replaced mine with a used one, might be the problem), or a failing MAP sensor, read my last post for details. Try and disconnect the vac line between the throttle body and MAP sensor while your jeep is idling fast, and see if it drops back down to normal like mine does. Hopefully we can figure this out together. Let me know if you get anywhere on it. |
