Poor man's stereo. Will it work?
I'm one of those people that love to have awesome sound but don't have the money to provide it. But I found a cheap way. I'm pretty much hoping I can do this without running a second alternator in my car. So here it goes...
I want to put in an amplifier in my car, well I don't have one. So I am considering using my Yamaha T-150 guitar amp. I think it would work, but I don't know about the power. The amp itself puts out 100 watts and 120 volts. I figured I could use this power converter I have which plugs into my cigarette lighter. The converter can take the abuse because it carries up to 140W on a constant current and carries 120V. But will the car be able to take it? I just don't wanna run into some electrical problems by attempting this "poor man's stereo". |

well, that's certainly gonna be ghetto rigged - and probably won't sound that good. 100 watts at 12volts will pull less than 10 amps so it shouldn't harm your car's electrical system.

Re: Poor man's stereo. Will it work?
If your definition of "awesome sound" is loudness? Then yes you'll love it, if your definition is sound quality? You'll be looking elsewhere for awesome sound on the cheap.
Guitar Amps and especially their speakers have a limited frequency bandwidth, they are optimized for the freq range of a guitar, not a CD player. Scout around for some used car audio stores, you may be able to score something even marginally decent for a small price, even if you have to get it a piece at a time.

Re: Poor man's stereo. Will it work?
I've invested about $800 into mine and it sounds pretty nice. It basically sounds almost like I could enter a competition with it. It consists of 2 Kicker 12's, a Sony X-plode head unit, a Lightning Audio 750W amp, 2 250W Pioneer 6x9's, and a pre-made box.
