where is the MAF sensor

in a 2003 arero 2.2L auto. 134 cubic inch L4 FI (F) [L61] the car is a two owner car with 73000 kms . I took a looked in past the throttle plate and into the runners and still not seeing it. the maf part looks like it is bolted in in a inline position. the car has a check eng light on and the scanner code is PO172 oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a rich condition . so when i was at the throttle plate i found a bit of carbon build up and cleaned it out. but still no sign of the mass air flow. also tested for vaccum leaks with a electronic leak detector and no luck. any ideas guys ?

Re: where is the MAF sensor

According to the GM FSM there is no MAF sensor used in the 2.2L Ecotec engine (L61) like the 3400 V6 engine. No diagnostic procedures in the FSM, nothing in the engine electrical wiring diagrams or no way it can give any MAF DTCs since there is no programming for one.

Re: where is the MAF sensor

concur that there is no MAFS... there's an IAT (#4)

... and a MAP (#2)

but why are you checking this when OP said there was a O2 sensor code...<shrugs>

you should be checking the 1st o2 sensor and / or the wiring
reset the car's pc to see if it comes back on...

Is this question addressed to me? To start first things first. No need looking for a MAF sensor when there isn't one and that was the topic title. Next step is to wait for a reply.

Next the P0172 DTC does not indicate the pre CAT 02 sensor is bad nor is it specifically or solely a 02 sensor code. Other issues can cause this DTC to set like fuel pressure, engine vacuum, fuel injectors, air intake duct, 02 sensor, etc. It is a short and long term rich trim condition.

Re: where is the MAF sensor

not directed at you, but i'd check that wire and then work my back to the other systems you mentioned

ps: thank you for the warning via PM; didn't know about it!

Re: where is the MAF sensor

thanks guys. so it's back to the car to check the vac, check with the electronic leak detector again, have the injectors cleaned ,fuel psi check and check and test all the wiring out real close. reset the po172 code and watch for the next check eng light. it's a case of me not getting to know this 2.2L eng in side and out as this is the first problem for the car. i will keep you posted on the results.

Re: where is the MAF sensor

Do you have access to a full function odb-ii scan tool? Check the sort and long term fuel trims.
