2002 Alero 4dr interior water leak

I have the 4 dr GL model Alero and have a serious water leak on the front driver's side. The carpet and mat are totally soaked. I've tried drying it out but it only returns. Is there a leak coming form the heater duct work? Where should I look and what is the best way the stop it?

Thanks in advance.

Re: 2002 Alero 4dr interior water leak

Before condeming the heater core check the lower water deflector strip around the bottom of the door.

If it is the plastic-butyl type, there is a new formed foam replacement type available.

TSB 02-08-64-015, June 2002.

Hope this helps.

Re: 2002 Alero 4dr interior water leak

Thanks for the tip. I will check that. It definately is not the heater core as it doesn't smell like anti-freeze plus the water is "pooling" on the driver side front floor. There is serious water coming in, so I think it is coming in from the firewall area maybe through the fresh air intake. Is that possible? It seems that it is worse after a heavy snow or when the roads are sloppy. So it seems to come in worse when driving, but I could be wrong....

Look for service bulletin 01-08-57-007A, dated April 2002. It's a general water leak guide for Aleros, and should show you were to look. I will email a copy to you if you send me a PM with an email address, or your dealer might be able to get it for you.

Re: 2002 Alero 4dr interior water leak

Is the passenger side wet, UNDER the carpet?

Hate to tell you this , BUT, if your carpet is that wet, it has to be completely removed and hung out to dry....that involves removing both front seats and the center console.....check under the rear seat pad to see if water is there....

If you don't do this, you won't find the source of the leak(s), there are "grounds" under the carpet that will corrode and cause possible electrical problems...the DERM for the air bag is under the passenger seat, and you don't want that to get wet.....also, that carpet will develope a mold smell that can be very bogus, if not thoroughly dried....

But here is the good news....with everything out, it will be easy to find the leak or leaks.....you want to wipe the floor dry....then have one person stay in the car with a flashlight......have someoneone thoroughly soak the vehicle with a hose....roof, front and rear w/s's......door side windows....doors......if you found water under the rear seat, could have a trunk leak, too...with the carpet out, it will be easy to see if the water barrier in the door(previously mentioned in another post) is the source of the leak....

The main thing is to try and find all possible leaks....don't assume there is just one....
