Time to lube the speedo cable.....Again

I was just wondering what is the best lube to use on the speedo cable. The last time I did it (about 5 years ago) I used chassis grease but was wondering if a white grease like Lubriplate would be better and last longer.

Thanks

Al

I use a 20wt non detergent oil with graphite mixed in at 1 table spoon/ pint...then using a hose on the output of an oil can force the mix into the cable from the dash connection....

this graphite will keep the cable lubed...and the oil will penitrate the cable and carry the graphite to all areas..

this mix also works great for the door hinges...
I have never replaced any since this is what I have been using for decades..

non detergent oil,,, NOT ENGINE OIL...

Thanks for the reply.

Is there any other type of graphite paste/grease available to use for this application?

The inner cable can be removed from the housing at the dash connection and i was hoping I could apply a paste/grease directly to the cable.
Although I'm sure your mixture works great, I will be left with a lot of unused mixture/oil that will be sitting around the garage for years.

How about mixing the graphite with some Royal Purple max ATF I have left over from my trans service?

this mixture is used around my property to lube most anything that needs lubrication from hidges to lawn mower wheels/pulleys...the graphite [dust] not grease is a great long lasting lubricant...mixed with the non detergent oil.....

atf is not a lubricant as such,,,and engine oil will just drain off as this is how it must be in the engine..
non detergent oil is used because of its ability to cling to the metal and not drain off,,this aids in lasting lubrication....

it is possible your cable is rotten and water has entered,,,if this is the case you may have to replace or use a sealer type product if possible...on the outer casing..

as you stated remove at the dash connection and pump into the cable as I explained..
