How do I seal a power steering pump

I have a lincoln towncar 1994 v8 and need to know how to seal the power steering pump. please help

Can't really seal one up without rebuilding it and replacing all the seals. Are you sure the pump is leaking? There is lots of other places for that system to leak. I have some good used pumps and lines if you need any.

Well I decided to do the work myself. remove and replace the pump. How much does the pump you have for my car cost and how can I get the pump out . I took out 3 bolts one to the tire rod and and triend to pry it out, it would not budge.

There is a sensor on the back side of the pump you will have to remove, I believe it's a 6 or 7 mm allen wrench to remove. You will see another bolt behind that sensor. It also might help to remove the oil filter to gain more room in there. Send me an e mail at [email protected] for more info. I can send some pics and prices for what I have.

well the car is still sitting because I couldnt get the one bolt out thats connected to the tire rod end. could this be where I use the 6mm alen. Maybe A picture will help me.

Not sure about any bolts going to the tie rod end ? That sensor that I was talking about is bolted directly to the back of the pump. Send me a picture of what you got and we'll try to figure out what going on.

I feel really stupid. I went the auto store to ask them about how I can remove the pump, and found out this is not the power steering pump its the steering gear box. I cant get it off at the pitman arm. My friend said he got the name wrong but that must be replaced. How can I get that pitman arm off. Sorry about that.

Yes it's a real pain in the ass to get that pitman arm off the gear box. You need a puller and air impact wrench to make things easier. You can use a breaker bar and a pipe, but I no longer have the strength for that, so I use the impact. Some people will yell at me for using an air tool on a puller, but I don't care. Currently I have a pitman arm that I am trying to remove from a gear box, and I have the puller tool stuck on it. The pitman arm won't come loose and I can't back it off to remove the tool. I just left it and will get back to it later. If you are trying to replace the seals in the gear box, that's not easy either. I've tried it a few times and never had any success. You might want to just replace the gear box and pitman arm all together. I have some good used gear boxes that work well and don't leak for 50 bucks pluss the shipping. Unfortunately the damn thing weighs 41 pounds, so the shipping is expensive. Shoot me your zip code and I can tell you for sure. I have one already packaged that some one from overseas was begging for, of course they didn't take it.

Ok I mis read your post. It's getting late. So you have the gear box dangling from center link by the pitman arm stud. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut and smack the arm with a hammer, not the stud. You could also use a tie rod end separator aka pickle fork. It looks like a two pronged tuning fork. That tool slips between the rubber grease cap and the center link, it acts like a wedge between the two parts. The rubber cap always get damaged, but is easily replaced and not expensive. I'll take some pictures of a front suspension section I have laying out in the yard tomorrow. Hopefully that will help.

Ok a little front steering 101 for the lincoln town car. Sorry for the poor quality pic, the sun was too bright. Looking at the frame section on the left is the drag link or idler arm connected to frame. There is a center link which is a long bar that both the inner tie rod ends on each side, drag link and pitman arm connects to. There is two inner tie rod ends and two outer tie rod ends with a sleave that connects the 2 tie rod ends in the middle. On the right side the gear box is removed in the picture, you can see the hole in the center link. That is where the pitman arm stud is connected. The second picture you can see the gear box and the 2 tools I mentioned, both are cheap tools at any auto parts store.

Thanks I got the geer box off and replaced it. Its works good as far as the steering goes. But the car hesitate and take offs from stop signs, Its time to change the plugs and the cables, if this doesnt work could it be something else like the engine? It sometimes give off smoke when leaving a stop sign.
