Rear disc brake Plates

Howdy when I was doing my tranny today I discovered My rear disc brake backing plate was completely rusted out. Looking this over it appears you have to remove the axles to install new backing plates(Dust shields). Has anybody had to replace these on there truck? This appears to be a pretty big job for some dust shields.

Yes axels have to come out to replace.
They are only dust/mud and water splash shields to help keep splash stuff off of rotors and pads and slides.
But how much good they do is a big question.
They may help keep off some splash from other side from hitting brakes.
It is to hard to cover the rotor good to keep everything off of it.
I would hold on the job of replacing them untill you need axel seals or axel bearings or rear end repair.

I'm glad you just confirmed what I was thinking, I guess we mechanics think alike. LOL I did call Carquest and dorman list a 2 piece plate but isn't available yet, I have them making a phone call for me tomorrow to see how long it's going to take to get them in there warehouse. This 2 piece seems like it would be easier to install, but the PIA would be removing the old plate without taking out the axle. The plates on there has good material around the bolt holes. I also have a problem with my emergency brake locking up my rear wheel but that's another story.

The dust shields aren't that hard to replace. The rear diff. cover has to be removed and the pinion shaft pulled to remove the c-clips. You pull the c-clips and pull the axles out. That gives you great access to everything including the e-brakes. It really isn't that difficult of a job. By the way, I got my dust sheilds from the dealer for about $20/each.

I'm coming around, it now doesn't seem that bad of a job after researching it a little bit. Even putting in new seals will be a piece of cake. I just called my dealer and my cost was 69.19 list was 99.00.......

Wait, your cost for the dust sheilds was $69?? Wow, that's some extra markup they have. Try telling them your Dad (Mom, brother, sister, etc..)is/was a GM employee and you want the discount and see what they say. You may even want to call them to ask what the employee price is. That's way more than I paid for mine and I didn't ask for the employee discount...

edit: I forgot to add: You'll like having the axle out of the way to install the e-brake components anyway. My e-brake shoes went to hell because the dust shields were rusted out for so long. I'm not sure how it passed inspection to be honest with you.

The price I was quoted was with a shop discount, I have a shop. Dorman has aftermarket ones for 22.00 a pair at rock auto. Basically I'll be doing this all at once, my back brakes need servicing anyway, the ebrake is locking up my drivers rear.

Just to let you guys know I went to pick up my dust shields yesterday and my dealer ordered me the wrong parts, they ordered the heavy steel backing plates not the dust shields. They reordered the dust shields at 15.00 bucks each, both should be in today. I have my axles pulled out already waiting for my parts to come in to finish this up.
