tranny trouble

On my daughters '97 Jetta 2.0 auto, when it is put in Rev it makes a big clunk and dies. If I raise the RPM and put in Rev (with no brakes) it rolls and clunks. Before this happened it was slipping and shaking at speed. Anyone got any insight on what the problem is and how to fix? Just so people don't think I'm a newbie, I've been working on cars for about 35 years but NEVER touched a foreign car. Any help is apreciated. TIA

Re: tranny trouble

I have no specific info, but 97 Jettas like other cars since the early 90's, probably use solenoids inside the transmission for controlling shifting, and for the lock-up function of the torque converter. I dont know if they had trouble codes for transmission problems in Jettas in 97, but getting the codes 'scanned' would be my first action. That and changing the ATF in the tranny, and replacing the filter. A 97 Jetta might have an external transmission filter, like the Saturns did.

It's my daughter's car. She brought it somewhere to have the fluid and filter changed a couple months ago. Now someone else looked at it and said they might have used the wrong fluid which in turn screwed up the tranny. Would this happen? Does VW use a different fluid on these sealed trannys?
