87 cvcc wont start PLEASE HELP!!(long winded)

just bought an 87 civic 4dr 1.5 carb. i was drivin on the highway at like 3grand and then it died...it wouldnt start back up . i kept crankin and cracnkin and it didnt start i had spark but it still wouldnt turn on. my bro told my that the timin belt is cut and that i need to do a water pump and timing belt. but my mechanic says to get a new motor.....so if anybody knows or have any suggestions on what i should do plz lmk or lmk wat swap fits right in with the same mounts.....(if u have any d-series for sale lmk.) thnx i appreciate the help....ps this i my first car!
