06 impala ss transmission troubles

anyone have insight on why my 06 impala ss with 16,000 miles would have slipping and surging in the transmission? i just put a k&n cold air intake on it and it started shortly after that.my warranty expired, 3yr 36,000 and it was bought in late 05. so im out of luck if its actually a trans issue. im hoping its an air/fuel comp issue or something .any imput is appreciated!!!

Don't think k& n has anything to do with it,you have a bad soildnid or more serious internal troubles with the tranny, does she have a code ,bring it to a tranny shop get them to check it for you so you don't do anymore damage,is your fluid level topped right up??

no codes no engine lites nothing, fluid is full and has no burnt smell or dark appearance. it almost feels like a miss when your going any steady speed when it surges and it will slip while shifting and the rpms will sail until i lift off the gas then it seems to shift. it also feels like its dropping into gear to fast instead of accelerating first.

Re: 06 impala ss transmission troubles

Does the noise stop when you put it in gear and apply a load? If so the cause is the sprocket support bearing is failing and some debris may be geting into the valvebody causing a valve to hang up.

Are you the original owner and when was the vehicle purchased? There is a good chance that GM may cover this failure as a goodwill repair if your the original owner, depending on the original delivery date...but that is also dependent on your dealers willingness to request the zone reps approval for the repair.

Re: 06 impala ss transmission troubles

well here is the update on my issue with my transmission. I had to have it towed on my way to work because it was slipping so bad,I figured my best option was to have it taken to a dealership incase they would consider the fact that the vehicle just went out of warranty and it also had low miles. they called today and said there were no codes nothing to explain the problem and they had to drop the pan. I got a call an hour ago and they said the trans was trashed, metal shavings everyplace,I was concerned that there might be a prob due to the aftermarket air intake installed on it and they may blame it on that. but to my surprise they told me it would be covered by GM and I only had to pay a 200.00 deductible! so i am pretty happy to hear that. I was expecting the worst and it has turned out to be much better than I ever expected so there is hope for GM!!! thanks for your imput and I will keep you posted if anything else turns up! like they change there mind or something....

Good to here they are covering it,you shoud have just took off the aftermarket intake and put the original one back on before you let them see it,they (the dealor ) will always blame the car owner if anything goes wrong with the car so they don't have to cover it and blame you for making upgrades from the original parts to cause damage to it,good luck, hope it works good for you

Re: 06 impala ss transmission troubles

Actually having aftermarket parts will not void the warranty unless GM explicitly says so i the description of the warranty (an over-oiled K&N would void the warranty on intake parts, but nothing else).

It's a shame that such a new car would have a major tranny failure like this. This is actually pretty common in 06 V8 W-bodies. Why couldn't GM have modified it to withstand the high amounts of torque that the LS4 makes rather than pay tons to repair dying transmissions?

Re: 06 impala ss transmission troubles

sorry I disagree...here's a copy/paste from a GM TSB.........while there have been many vehicles repaired under warranty that had this type of filter, if GM or a zone rep wanted to deny the claim they are entitled too.

The use of an excessively/over-oiled aftermarket, reusable air filter may result in:
• Service Engine Soon (SES) light on
• Transmission shift concerns, slipping and damaged clutch(es) or band(s)
• Engine driveability concerns, poor acceleration from a stop, limited engine RPM range
The oil that is used on these air filter elements may be transferred onto the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor causing contamination of the sensor. As a result, the Grams per Second (GPS) signal from the MAF may be low and any or all of the concerns listed above may occur.
When servicing a vehicle with any of these concerns, be sure to check for the presence of an aftermarket reusable, excessively/over- oiled air filter. The MAF, GPS reading should be compared to a like vehicle with an OEM air box and filter under the same driving conditions to verify the concern.
The use of an aftermarket reusable air filter DOES NOT void the vehicle's warranty.
If an aftermarket reusable air filter is used, technicians should inspect the MAF sensor element and the air induction hose for contamination of oil prior to making warranty repairs.
Transmission or engine driveability concerns (related to the MAF sensor being contaminated with oil) that are the result of the use of an aftermarket reusable, excessively/over-oiled air filter are not considered to be warrantable repair items.
GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
