Cracked front bumper & headlamp assembly

Yippie, I managed to whack a guardrail during our recent winter storm warning and I cracked the front bumper and the passenger side headlamp. Seems to be causing no mechanical issues, but what am I looking at to get this repaired? I am assuming a whole new front bumper and a new headlamp assembly for one side. Anyone else done this, if so the costs??

Re: Cracked front bumper & headlamp assembly

Well RockAuto has headlight assemblies from 73.89 and up.

They also sell the "bumper cover" which according to the picture, is the large fiberglass piece that goes on the front, surprisingly for as low as 53.79, but I bet shipping for that would be a pain in the buttocks. That also is probably unpainted.

You thinking about doing the work yourself or paying someone else?

Re: Cracked front bumper & headlamp assembly

That headlamp assembly isn't too bad, shipping is under $10. The bumper cover's shipping is about twice what you pay for the bumper, so I may try something different with that. Ebay has some of the same or similar bumper covers for much less shipping $$$, just worried about quality. If I can do the work myself I would prefer that, aside from the paint, although I'm not sure as to the difficulty level of the bumper, much less I have very little time to spend in the freezing weather to do it. Has anyone here ever put a new bumper cover on?

Re: Cracked front bumper & headlamp assembly

Well....Ive taken it off before. Its not terribly difficult.

Youll need to take off all the little screws that run along it, its hard to describe, but it makes sense when youre under there. Theyre only like a 6-7 mm bolt head, possibly even a 6.5 I cant recall. They run all along the bumper, and youll even have to take off a few on the inner fender if memory serves.

There should also be some bolts near the hood latch area, or I think they may actually be some sort of rivet maybe? Im sorry Im doing this totally off memory.

Then, if you remove the headlamp assemblies on both sides, deep in the fender well area there is 1 bolt on each side. Its near a white plastic "thingy" Theyre really short bolts, but that cover will not come off without them loose.

Other than that I think it basically just pops off. At least the one youre taking off is already broken, so you cant destroy it too badly.

Re: Cracked front bumper & headlamp assembly

How long does Rock Auto take to ship parts? I'm considering getting the headlamp from them, but one the ebay stores says they ship the next business day (hoping Monday) with UPS, which is usually very timely. I'm trying to get the headlamp by Thursday, because that's the only day this week I don't work 13 hours a day. Think either can get the part to me by then?

The bumper cover is less of a timely thing, I've found an ebay store for ~$120 shipped (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...id=p2759.l1259) that will also paint the part, although for an extra $165. I'm not a worried about time on this one, although if I can get the part by this weekend, I have one day to try and fit it. Working 60-70 hours a week is terrible, don't try it.

Re: Cracked front bumper & headlamp assembly

I think RockAuto usually ships same or next business day depending on the time of the order. I honestly cant remember though. I only buy stuff from them that I dont need to replace quickly, so therefore Ive never paid much attention haha.

They may have a shipping policy somewhere on their site. But if you need it that fast you might go with Ebay. Most of the time if someone has the gual to make that guarantee theyll back it up. But sometimes they ship it whenever they feel like it too.

I'd get the headlight off ebay. You'll probably get it much faster. The last thing I ordered from RockAuto took a week and a half to get here...

I bought one on ebay a few years ago and the wiring harness was miswired. The light almost caught on fire before the fuse blew. Just make sure you know who you are buying from.
