1999 Jetta (automatic)Trouble Starting

My Jetta was idle for about a year. In that time the battery went dead. I jumped it and started it. Put it on a trickle charger, but the battery was dead. Tried to jump again but the engine wouldn't turn over at all. Got a new battery and the same results. All interior lights, radio, windows, key fob, etc work fine, but the running lights dim and the fuel pump seems to engage (there is a "whoosh" when the key is turned) but the engine won't turn. I checked fuses and could not find a problem. Any suggestions?

Re: 1999 Jetta (automatic)Trouble Starting

Your car is several years newer than my newest - but check all possible interlocks; such as moving the shift lever in/out of park to clean dirt off the contacts in the 'neutral safety switch'. Will the modern cars work if the gas cap is loose? Do you have to have your foot on the brake for the starter to work, etc. You might want to have the OBD-II codes scanned, to see if the computer is unhappy about anything. (Could it think you are trying to steal it?)
