99 cavalier need to press gas to start

I have a 99 cavalier that has problems starting I have to push on the gas to get it going. We have change the full pump and some other things, we notice it happens when it gets warm. It seems like its flooding itself.

Check the CTS, if the PCM is seeing the temp much lower than it actually is, it will inject too much fuel for warmer temperatures and cause your problem

Re: 99 cavalier need to press gas to start

Do you have any codes set? That will usually tell you if a sensor value is off, but maybe not always. Check that your TPS resistance is right for closed throttle. Check fuel pressure and make sure it holds and doesn't leak down- this will tell you if your injectors or pressure regulator are leaking down and that you have correct fuel pressure. Also check pressure regulator vaccuum hose for gas leaking out.

Check injector resistance with a voltmeter. I think it's hard to get a voltmeter on the injectors on this engine. But you should be able to unplug the main injector harness and get access. You will probably need a service manual to tell you which pins go to each injector. Then you can also check the other side of the injector harness to the PCM with a 12 volt test light hooked to positive battery voltage to see that the PCM is cycling the injectors.

I assume you are getting a healthy spark while it's hard to start right?

Well I didn't have any idea it had that many miles. you might want to first check the compression. There's no set miles an engine stops working. It depends on the maintanance and how it was driven. It stops working whenever something gives out or wears out. I think you are pushing the upper limit for this 4-cylinder though.
