Brake Question
I just had brake pads and rotors replaced front and rear on my 2003 Yukon XL with 63,000 miles.
First set of pads on the front so that's pretty good. Second set of pads and rotors on rear - first around 40,000 miles. Two questions: 1. Is it typically for the rear brakes to have that much more wear than the front? 2. What's the deal with the rotors being used? Are rotors today basically "throw away" single use. It seems that none of them can be machined. |

It is possible that there is some binding in the rr caliper slides that would cause the rear to wear sooner, with 4w discs the front are not as biased as the disc drum combo. The rotors may have been too worn or rusted to be resurfaced, or the shop just doesn't resurface rotors, ask them.

scuff the pads with sand paper and don't get any grease or lube on them. scuff the drums too, and clean them real good with brake spray after install.

If you had any experience with these brakes you would know that it is really common for the rear rotors to rust out. Once there rotted there junk! In fact on many of these the rear backing plates get replaced at the same time as the rotors because they rust away.

The inside where you can't see the rust on car is almost always the issue.
