Power window help!!

My 1998 venture has a l/f power window module problem, at least that's what car-x said?? They said that gm is proud of their part and the price is 979.00 for a piece of plastic. Here is my question, is does the part go out commonly or rarely, can you get it from any other place than a dealer, and could it be something else. Help would be greatly appreciated.

There is no power window module. At least not in my 2000 Silhouette and I doubt there's any difference between the two.

The system consists of the control switches, the motors, the glass mechanisms (tracks and regulator) and associated wiring.

Tell us what the window is or is not doing and we'll go from there.

The window will not go up or down, it will make a noise like it is but it does not. It started acting up after a very hard freeze and we touched the button when opening the door and that was when it happened.

There is a module on the driver's side window button. It causes the window to open all the way with just one touch rather than holding the button down. That module is part of the button and does fail pretty often. Failure of that module just means you have to hold the open button down manually however, it has nothing to do with preventing the window from working at all.
GM window motors all fail as this one is described. The motor's just get tired, and quit working. Usually you get some warning its time for a repair--the motor goes slower and slower on the way up, often quits and needs a rest. Most folks end up 'helping' the window on the way up until they can get the motor replaced.

Replacing the window motor is no fun as its rivited in the door, but is a normal repair proceedure for all GM owners at some point.

The motor isn't riveted in, it's just bolted. There is a module (not an electronic module rather as in: "it's modular"), it is the entire power window setup. You may need the entire module, but could get one from a junkyard for much less the $900+. The dealer is just trying to make it as easy for themselves as possible. Pull the motor first and check the gear and rack that it mates to. If the gear is shot then you just need a new motor at a cost of around $80.

Very nice. I looked up the procedure for replacing the window motor in the 1999 van. I haven't looked in the door since the 1993 models. They do have bolts now! That really makes it much easier. You used to have to drill the things out and it wasn't fun.

The 2000 chev safari still has rivets on its motor, but the venture does not!.
