Transmission problems

Hey guys another blazer issue. I went out to my truck today put it in reverse and heard a snap and then the transmissions pump got real noisy. Needless to say it does work in drive and 1,2,3 but now it has no reverse. This truck only has 80,000 miles and would seem way to early for a complet transmission rebuild. The noise in the tramsmission pump does go away when you give it a few rpm's but im thinking were prolly heading for a rebuild. I serviced the tranny 10,000 miles ago with a new filter and fluid change. I'm also thinking because of the pump noise I prolly can't get away with replacing just the valve body. What are your impressions of this? I'm having a hard time thinking it needs a rebuild at 80000 it's too soon...........

You are going to have to tear itbdown to fix it.
Good time to rebuild it when in there.
Or just spring for a GM factory rebuilt.
3 year and well over 50 K warranty.
But what ever.
Replace the sun shell with the HD one.
Good Luck

Re: Transmission problems

Call your dealer for the price.
Some give better price than other.
And some give a 100-200$ rebate.
Usually around 1500-2000 $
The factory rebuilt should have all updates done.
But not sure if they use the best beast sun sheel gear or HD sun gear sheel or just a better GM sheel.
Again ask the GM parts dealer to find out for you.
Let us know what he tells you.

Re: Transmission problems

I talked to my transmission guy this morning and he said he would completely rebuild mine with a beast sunshell, new updates to valve body and new convertor for $850.......With a 12 month warranty. I take it to him and hell turn it around in a day in a half. I'm getting ready to pull it today!!!!! Dam I'm glad I bought that hoist.....

MT do you think my other post could be related to my tranny taking a shit?

Re: Transmission problems

That is a good question.
But.
Hard to say about that.
There may be more problems in the transmissionthan sun gear shell.
See how the rear noise does after you get the transmission rebuilt.
Also tell your rebuilder about the clunk noise so he can watch and check everything in the transmission.
Let us know how it goes.

Re: Transmission problems

What do u think of this, I found a 30000 mile tranny out of a 2004 blazer for $750 with a scrap yard warranty. We have a very large gm scrap yard near me witch deals in low to very low mileage parts. hmmm something to think about in 04 did they fix the sunshell problem?

Crazy, It will not move at all? You sure your flywheel bolts did not fall out? My last S-10 with a 700-r4 tranny went 325,000 miles before going out it finally blew out overdrive then shelled the torque converter,I picked up one from my local pick and pull junk yard outa a low miles astro van and had to switch over sensors but worked like a charm and also switched gears like a race tranny being valved for the weight of a astro van and it only cost 125 bucks lol..

Positive These blazers are known to have inferior sunshell gears witch commonly break and when they do you have no reverse. And also My flywheel was attached like it was suppose to when I took it out yesterday.

I dropped it off to the rebuilder today and he's gonna hook me up with a new neutral safety switch witch I broke being gm had a great idea to glue the connectors in to it. Idiots This guy has a killer turn around I dropped it off at noon and I'll have it tomorrow afternoon.

Also will 6 quarts be enough to fill this thing back up?

More like 12 QT.
With drained converter or rebuilt converter and flushed out oil coolers.

Put 5-6 in before you start it.
A then start engine a few seconds and shut off.

As your rebuilder about what kind of fluid to use.
Also ask him what all he found bad in there.
Post back what he found.
Dexron 111 is no longer made.
Then add 3-4 more.
Then start engine and drop it into reverse and drive and back to park.
The leave engine running in park and fill to cold line.

Then warm it up good on the road and fill to center of hot mark.
Good Luck with it.

Re: Transmission problems

In '02, the 4L60E's were upgraded a little, which helped in the durability. The sunshell was upgraded, but it still was hit and miss, and it also depended on how it was driven too. As for oil, dexron VI is a good oil, a much better improvement in oxidation stability, heat breakdown etc. My choice still though has been Amsoil tranny fluid. I use this in everything I own, great oil.

As for the safety switch, they were not glued, it looks like that but that was not the case. There was a TSB on this, the switch would heat up as a result of it taking heat from the transmission. The glue that was used in the switch itself melted and oozed out to the connection and damaged the connection causing transmission problems to pop up. The new switches are suppose to be better built to avoid this problem.

Re: Transmission problems

Great info guys... I picked my tranny up this morning and the sunshell teeth were completely gone, my clutches actually looked pretty good, He said the fluid smelled burnt so maybe the convertor was going south. The valve body was rebuilt including a new harness and solenoid. All this in a 80,000 mile tranny witch should of had another 50,000 of life left at least. Oh well I'll be putiing it back in on saturday, I had to order a prindel switch being the tranny shop didn't have 1, That will be in tomorrow morning... I have a tranny jack on reserve for a saturday pickup to save my back.... I'll let ya know how it turns out.
