Question changing crankshaft and bearings?

can anybody tell me if a crank is available new or aftermarket for a 97 3.8? if so is this an expensive fix?this motor already has new gm heads upper plenhiem and injectors. i replaced the cam sensor and about 20 miles later the bottom end started hammering then she just stopped running.im thinking the bottom end was weak and when the sensor was replaced the rest of the motor started working stronger and the bearings let go .any suggestionswould be greatly appreciated thanks

Parts, short blocks are all available thru many sources, Napa for one. Yes this is a big job. I would suggest a good used engine here.

I agree with this... Chances are if the crank was scarred and you have to turn it more than .020 under the crank will be trash... Even better yet being that this motor must have spun a rod bearing you will have to have the Rod/Rods resized... By the time you do these small items it would have been a lot cheaper to find a Low Mileage Unit...

Re: changing crankshaft and bearings?

If you intend to keep the car, look into a Jasper reman with a 3 year, 100,000 mile warranty. The remans from parts stores are junk using the cheapest parts and the warranty sucks.Jasper uses high quality parts which are all new componets and does upgrades. An used engine has a 30 to 90 day warranty and most yards do not run them first making sure they are good.

Re: changing crankshaft and bearings?

How many people here that post problem have the $$$$ for a Jasper Reman?

I will say that I am lucky that I have an LKQ that is actually not a U Pull it.. And they do give 6 Month warranties on their engines..

If he searches he may find a very low mileage motor for a very reasonable price..

Jasper is a Good reman and I would recommend it to those that can afford it.. If you have the $$$$ and intend to keep the car Jasper is the way to go..

Re: changing crankshaft and bearings?

Try Ed Morad, Moradpartscompany.com. You should be able to get a good used 3.8 for less than $1000 especially since it is a NA engine.
