Oil filter wrench

I have a 2001 Silverado with a 5.3 liter V-8. With Mobil 1 in the engine, the oil filter gets very slipery. I'm wondering what size oil flter wrench to get. I use a WIX 51522 filter. I see several different sizes - not sure how to measure.

Thanks

Re: Oil filter wrench

I bought my wrench at napa, it is stamped steel, when I bought the first filter I just tried them till one fits. I looked at mine and there is no size or part number must have worn off. I started with the ac delco and switched to wix and it was the same wrench.
Does the filter get slippery between oil changes, if it does then there would be a leak. I just use the wrench to get it loose to where I can spin it by hand at that point there is no oil coming out. I then spin it till oil starts to drain , let it sit there for awhile then take the filter off, no mess.

Re: Oil filter wrench

There is no oil leakage between changes. I'm more concerned about tightening it properly - things are tight where they put the filter. If you get any oil on the outside of the new filter.........

this slippery filter story reminds me when I first replaced my mobil 1 syn. oil...the filter went shooting out of my hand....I agree you must have the filter socket to properly install and remove these ...

advance auto had a number of sockets,,,match with the filter you use ...

Re: Oil filter wrench

well, yes, filter sits inside a recess in the engine block, and there's not much of space to put anything in there.
1. my experience with "cap" type filters, ones that match the ridges on the filter, is TERRIBLE. they last about one filter change, then spread and ain't worth a flip anymore.
2. I use one that is adjustable in size and has pivoting handle. it is, basically, a thin metal belt that wraps around filter and snugs as you turn the handle counterclockwise, turning the filter. It fits fine into the gap between filter and block
3. My all time favorite is one that looks like spider: has 3 prongs that open wide and then close on the filter and grab it. I like it as I can put 1/4 inch extension or wrench into it. Drawback is - you have to "get it started" by clamping those prongs on the filter with your hand, or it will have too much free play before it catches on its own. But it fits VARIOUS size filters.
4. For your purpose, I'd say, belt type remover should be perfect. They have new ones that are, basically, flat belts that you can feed through the handle and snug 'em up on filter by turning handle.

On a general note, filter should be hand snug only, thus should be able to be removed with hand either. Not always happens, but should.

easy solution for you is - switch to K&N filters. About same price, but has nice large nut on the top. Piece of cake. Same quality as M1.
