Re: Awd???

Its not even close to as simple as you think

You need the AWD trans, matching transfer case, matching driveshaft, entire rear subframe with rear end matching the trans, and then you have to cut off the stock mounting points for the FWD rear axle and weld on the mounting points to be able to bolt up the AWD rear sub frame.

Then you have to get a bushing and add it to make the rear struts go tot the proper angle so they can mount. You also are lacking some mounting points for the driveshaft carrier bearings.

Theres a reason very few people have completed the AWD swap. Is it doable? Yes. Is it for a novice? No way in hell.

Re: Awd???

It is a job that even a lot of people with a fair amount of mechanical experience would try to undertake. If you want AWD, just get a VR4. In the amount of time you could be working and getting paid and plus the price of all the parts for the AWD transmission you could have just sold your SL and bought a VR4 with more power, features, etc.

Re: Awd???

being one of the first/few people that have done the AWD swap... In all honesty, don't waste your time or money. I have a full 3000GT/Stealth shop at my disposal with every tool imaginable, and someone to do the work that has 10+ years experience working with these cars.

For the cost, you can sell your car, and buy a VR-4. You will need an entire VR-4 parts/donor car. You can not piece together this kind of conversion.

I just noticed, you're in VA. We're located in PA. If you really wanted to have your car converted, you're more than welcome to bring it up to us, or have it shipped. We charge $2000 plus parts for the conversion. PM me if you're interested in talking about it more.

It's the same labor price if your car is already automatic. If I have to convert it to automatic, then it adds another $400.

Re: Awd???

sorry man, i should have been more clear. I'm looking to convert my VR-4 to an Auto, like you guys did with the silver one. I can get my hands on an ATX GTO SR trans and transfercase, but i dont have the knowhow for the project. Is that something you guys would take on? and do you know what year trans i should get to match up with the rest of my drivetrain?

Re: Awd???

Im pretty sure you will need the 6 speed rear if you want to convert to the AWD ATX.

Re: Awd???

Just curious Autostrada, why do you want an automatic transmission? I love my manual!

I've done this before, not a big deal. You will need a 6 speed rear, an SR trans/torque converter with t-case and the front yolk and u-joint, auto shifter, auto brake pedal (optional), non-turbo automatic engine harness, tcu, resistors for fuel injectors (or we can wire in the stock resistor pack), transmission mounting bracketing, trans cooler, flex plate, flex plate bolts, etc.

I'd do the swap for $1200.

Re: Awd???

My left knee is kinda jacked up from an old injury so clutching alot bothers it. If it wasn't my daily driver it would be fine, but the every day thing sucks.
What i'm REALLY looking to do is get a Spyder VR4 (about a year from now, unless some spectacular deal presents itself), and eventually do the ATX conversion on that. Then possibly swap the 6-spd from that into my '93, and build the motor to 500-600 AWHP.
Spyder VR4 ATX as a nice sporty cruiser
93 VR4 as the weekend warrior

just trying to get an idea of what i'm in for.

Re: Awd???

then why not just get a Spyder SL, save yourself 10-15k, and turbo it?

Re: Awd???

trying to sell your spyder already?
lol

i dont know really...if the right deal came along i might consider it, but the spyder vr4 is somehow...more. Not just in the obvious things, it's the collectability, rarety, the fact that it was the most expensive car mitsu ever sold. It's kind of hard to explain. My mindset on the 3000 in general is that mitsu designed it to be TT, AWD. Anything less is a diluted version somehow. Not that theres anything wrong with the SL/base, they're good cars it their own right...but it your read any of the 3/s magazine reviews from back in the day, you never really hear about them testing the n/a's. Go big or go home i guess.

Mine isn't for sale. Hans' 96 Spyder SL is though. Just an FYI, the 96 Spyder SL is the rarest Spyder produced.
