Economical replacement for Tamiya masking tape

I read about it on another forum, looked it up, and drove down the street and bought a roll.

It's called Shurtape Razor Edge Gold/CP 60.

Shurtape Gold

It comes in a variety of widths. I got a standard 1" wide roll, same as any other basic roll of masking tape, for under $5 USD including tax.

In the US it seems to be available at a lot of stores that sell paint supplies, including Sherwin Williams, Lowes, Porter Paints, etc. I got mine at the Sherwin Williams store.

I tried a piece, it seems identical to Tamiya tape. So if you can live without the fancy dispenser, this stuff is the perfect replacement to overpriced Tamiya tape. It's great stuff

I knew it was a matter of time before finding this stuff; unpacking a Wii this Christmas the tape was used in some of the ancillary packaging.

Re: Economical replacement for Tamiya masking tape

Yeah I saw that too and have been googling a lot for that in Europe.

Found some in the end but 24 rolls is a bit too much up front outlay for me to make it worth while really. Very good news for those who have easier access to it though

Re: Economical replacement for Tamiya masking tape

ScaleColors is distributing this kind of tape, the same Tamiya uses. Our rolls are 50 meters long (tamiya rolls are 18 meters) and 6, 12 or 19 mm wide.

I tried using the Spot Model website, and it was extremely slow. The links were not completely dead, but they produced virtually no results.

I'll continue using HLJ, where I can get Tamiya tape and especially Aizu Micron masking tape. It comes in very useful narrow widths, less than 6 mm.

Sorry, but seems like this site went on line before it was ready.

If you live in the San Francisco area, you can find masking tape very similar to Tamiya's for $1.50 each at Daiso(japanese version of the 99cent store).

Spotmodel is under new management for a short time now. They are still improving the webpage, updating the database and adding new products.

Re: Economical replacement for Tamiya masking tape

I picked up a roll a couple of weeks ago, and I like it. Had some problems b/c of the low tack level, but the edge is definitely very sharp, and it might just take some extra burnishing to get it to lay down securely.

Re: Economical replacement for Tamiya masking tape

In our club we use this tape. It's like the Tamiya tape but much cheaper.

The shop gives a great service.

Re: Economical replacement for Tamiya masking tape

Thanks, Bob, for the recommendation. I just visited my local Sherwin Williams store and got a roll. I'll still use the narrower tapes (in those nifty dispensers, no less) from Tamiya, but it is nice to have this stuff available in these extra widths and at very reasonable prices.
