2001 Escape code P0402 exhaust gas ???

My daughters Ford Escape 2001 is idling rough, but seems to run out OK! I scanned it and it came back with P0402 "exhaust gas recirculation flow excessive detected" . Any help would really be appreciated !

This probably a "red herring" error.

If the flow was excessive, the engine would run poorly and possibly even stall.

Probably a problem with the DPFE.

A common problem with the 01 model.

I had to change this part 4 times already. (3 under warranty).
