My caprice 0-60

Nothing special really i mean its only a 305..but i just thought i'd post this. Picking up a K&N filter soon cause i heard it can add up to an 8RWHP and also better MPG

I have one question though, in the second 0-60 run you can hear the transmission sort of "hang" switching from 1st-2nd gear. Compared to the first run however i might have been pushing the gas differently. Its kind of wierd because despite the fact, that was the faster run.

Re: My caprice 0-60

Your 1-2 shift accumulator spring is probably broken. Every one I've seen is broken in the transmissions when I've taken them apart. This causes that 1-2 soft shift.

It's an easy fix but it involves removing the pan on the transmission, and then the 1-2 shift accumulator cover. On some transmissions, the spring goes between the piston and the cover, on others the spring goes between the piston and the separator plate. Observe the location of yours when you pull it out. You can get these springs from any GM dealer, go for the heavy duty one for your year. They are color coded and these colors are different for different applications. Your dealer should help - these springs aren't expensive. A heavy duty spring will give your car a 1-2 shift 'kick'.

What do you mean by 'hung up'?

The job of the accumulator is to soften the application of the band just enough so that the shift isn't harsh and no parts are broken (remember the TH700R4/4L60 reaction sun shell hub is subject to breakage in stock form). It functions by providing a 'space' for the piston application fluid to fill along with the piston in the servo, resulting in a controlled drop in application pressure. The fluid pushes against a piston in the accumulator, and the spring in the accumulator resists this, thereby regulating the amount of flow into the accumulator (and apply pressure to the servo). When the spring breaks, the piston 'floors' and the pressure in the apply line drops, causing the band to slip a bit on the drum due to the increased apply time caused by the failed spring.

The result is that when driving softly (normally) you might not notice it, but under high acceleration there will be a lot of slip during the 1-2 shift and that's why the engine RPM in the video doesn't abruptly change, but rather 'flows' down during the shift until the band servo fully applies. This will eventually cause a burned band and a possibly warped drum.

This should be the only effect of the broken spring.

Re: My caprice 0-60

well not actually hung up, more like stuck. i made that post a while back about how mine seems to get stuck around 45 mph and i have to floor it for a second to get it going more. I remember someone mentioned a TCC sensor could be the problem too.

Use a site like www.tinypic.com to upload the image, you will probably need to resize the picture but i think you can do it on that site when you upload it. Then you have to add the image code to your avatar under your profile.

Don't mean to get off topic but is this what you need to do to post any pictures into a thread?

I can't seem to find info on the AF site about this.

Thanks

Al
