Temp Sensor Replacement: to DIY or not to DIY?

I've searched the forums, but couldn't find a recent post (within the last six months or so) about a similar issue...my brother-in-law has an '01 Malibu with about 120k miles on it. Our mechanic - and we (grammar?) - have concluded that, among other things, it has a faulty temp sensor.

My question is this: is it something a pair of novices can handle, or should we take it in to the shop to have them do it? I've replaced lights, serpentine belts, batteries, speakers, and a few hoses...and that's pretty much it. And unless I miss my guess, my brother-in-law has even less mechanical experience than I do. They just got back from their honeymoon, so money is tight, and we'd like to do it ourselves but don't want to get the darn thing half taken-apart before realizing we're in over our heads. :P

This is very doable for a DIY. It's no more involved than changing a hose or a spark plug would be.
