Replacing Rear View Mirror

I had to buy a new rear view mirror for my 98 explorer, because the switch for the automatic headlights malfunction in the old one. Does anyone know how to replace the mirror without taking the bracket off of the windshield that is glued on?

Re: Replacing Rear View Mirror

I've never had to change a mirror using this type of system, but here's what the factory service manual states for the the process:

Removal

1. Disconnect the inside rear view mirror electrical connector.

2. Turn the inside rear view mirror to the vertical position.

3. Remove the inside rear view mirror.
Twist the mirror horizontally until the tube assembly bottoms out and the spring releases off the mounting button.
Installation

1. Position the inside rear view mirror onto the mounting button.

2. Note:
Make sure the inside rear view mirror remains parallel to the windshield glass.

Slide the inside rear view mirror onto the mounting button while applying holding force against the button until a click is heard.

3. Connect the inside rear view mirror electrical connector.

4. Note:
The mirror mount is designed to detach from the button during air bag deployment. Excessive force or adjustment can cause the mirror to detach from the windshield.

Check the inside rear view mirror for normal operation.

Re: Replacing Rear View Mirror

Thanks Rod, I will give it a try. That is very interesting about the mirror mount detaching from the button when the air bags deploy. Hope I never have to see it in action.
