Cooling fans operation

Can someone tell me what determines how the 2 cooling fans turn on. Is the driver side one come on with engine temp? and the other? Thanks

They turn on anytime the AC is operating.
They turn on when the engine temp reaches a predetermined value, 229 def. F comes to mind from reading manuals. The PCM turns them on through a relay. The fans turn on at low speed and if the engine temperature reaches higher one of them goes to an even higher blower speed.
