couple of questions

I have a 1988 s10 blazer 4x4 with the 2.8 v6. I thought i was having a overheating problem, I had the 20 year old radiator cleaned out, replace the t-stat. still would get hot on the highway, I then got a very nice electric cooling fan which pulls more than enough cfm to cool the little motor. Still getting a little hot, I was driving about 170 miles the other day and i had to pull over because my gauges said i was running to hot. I was a heavy line mech for years but transmissions are not my thing. I was a bit stumped at first then i relized the trans cooler ran through the radiator, the inlet to the cooler was very hot, so i bypassed the trans cooler and added a crossflow aftermarket cooler, guess what, my engine temp stayed down. My question is, obviuosly the trans is running hot, it seems to be slipping and the fluid is burnt, if i change the fluid do you think i can make it another 170 miles back home, what do you think is causing this, bad bands, torque conv. anything people can tell me would be helpfull.

old age is your problem ..the fluid is hot because its slipping..changing the fluid and filter will increase pressures. with the oil cooler the fluid should be cooled more so ...I think that there should be less slippage...

damaged fluid is something that will require a complete rebuild when you get back...torque converter will need replacing for best life but this is a 1988... time to upgrade to a 90's...
