Gas Milage

Hey all, I know we've had a talk or two about gas milage, but I thought we could use another.

So as some of you probably remember, I had to do the t-stat in my Cavalier so I just did an oil change and put in a new air filter. Well, I was getting right around 28 mpg on like a 50/50 mix of city and highway before the change. I just filled up tonight and I gained a whopping 3.5 mpg on an oil change and new air filter alone! How awesome is that?! My driving has been consistent too, I vary my driving very little.

I still have the new tranny fluid (though that wont make a big difference in mpg) and a new fuel filter (original fuel filter in there, that should help a bit) to do, but didnt have time while I was home. I never checked the plugs either, though they are supposed to be some "100k mile plugs" or some shit. When the snow is all gone I'll get the new tranny fluid and fuel filter in, then check plugs and whatever else might need to be done, and at some point this summer I am going to throw a hard intake pipe and a K&N on there... my buddy's Accord grabbed 2 mpg that changed alone.

Anyway, I just thought it was interesting enough to share.

Re: Gas Milage

Almost 32mpg, thats not bad at all. How much city/highway driving is that? Not really sure why but my city mpg have gone to shit lately dropping below 20mpg. It could just be the way Im driving it but I dont boost it that much. Highway is still around 28-30mpg.

Re: Gas Milage

Hmmm... My Cobalt has had a CEL for a few months now and I'm only getting about 28mpg now instead of 33+ like I did when it was nicer outside... What a piece of junk. I can't wait till winter is over and I can do an all around tune up on this thing. It needs it bad. I thought about throwing a CAI on it just to see if it gets better mileage or not. I kinda hope it does. lol

Ya well when you get a CEL, you find out what it is and fix it. That's your fault buddy for not checking out what the problem is.

It comes and goes. Seems to be running the same as is, aside from the crap mileage. Oh well...

Re: Gas Milage

Well I am not currently in the state able to do metric conversions. Just woke up and realized I missed my hockey game at 2pm today so you know it was bad news lsat night thought some girl gave me a ride home turns out she didn't so I have no idea how I made it home last night at all. Probably walked but it was like 4 am when anyone last saw me so I have no idea.

anyways I get less than you guys maybe 400KM to the tank. Also I drive the fucking piss out of my car. lIke I'm hitting full boost on my street. So i don't even care about mileage. All I care about is spped.

Re: Gas Milage

400 km is like 240ish miles per tank. Just for reference, my Cavy has a smaller tank and I get 400 MILES to a tank .

Jason, thanks a pretty even mix of city and highway. I have a 25 minute commute to work 4-5 days a week and I give a friend of mine a ride to work from time to time, that usually works out to pretty much straight up 50/50.

Re: Gas Milage

I'm w/ Steve, when I drive the Eclipse I'm like always in the boost. All winter I've been driving my Explorer which just turned 200k miles and it gets 16mpg. I drive just about exactly 50 miles a day and it really sucks how often I have to fill up.

That's why taking public trans is better... cheap and I can sleep the entire ride.

I only get about 210 miles city to a tank. I dont wait till empty so I have to put about 12gallons back in it.

Re: Gas Milage

our camry was getting a great 32ish mpg highway before it shitbagged on us. now, the tranny is going out and we're only gettin 215ish on a full tank.

on my car, for road trips i can get 26-27miles to the gallon. pretty sweet!

Re: Gas Milage

A guy I work w/ has a Jeep Liberty and it gets terrible gas mileage. He was saying that around town, his average is 13mpg. What on earth can he do to increase mpg? He said something about those Jeeps naturally run rich, what can he do to thin it out a little?

Re: Gas Milage

Pretty much all cars come from the factory running a tad rich, its a safety measure. If something goes wrong and the car isn't running at peak fuel flow rates and the car is operated for an extended period the slightly higher AFR wont cause the motor to eat itself in knock.

If your buddy wants to go out and get a WBo2 and a SAFC to lean it out he could, but it would be ridiculous of him. I doubt the gas savings would overshadow the cost of those, and theres no real way to raise AFR's other than that.

Having a properly maintained car is the best way to get good gas mileage. Tell him to check the air filter, oil and filter, fuel filter, and tranny fluid, then maybe do a few bottles of that injector cleaner and make sure the tires are inflated properly. Then tell him to get his foot off the accelerator. I don't believe for one second that someone gets 13mpg in any vehicle by driving decent.
