'05 Jimmy Long Crank but Won't Start Cold

Hi all,

I know there are several threads on here already about this problem but most of them I scanned seem to be about fuel pressure problems. I used a pressure gauge at the schrader valve and had 60 lbs while cranking and it doesn't leak back any signifigant amount so I don't think it's a leak. The friggin thing just won't start.

I had a guy give me some crap about a vent in the bottom of the distributor so I cleaned that out (it was full of stuff so probably didn't hurt to clean it), the distributor cap and rotor look good, not corroded. The plug I pulled looked ok, was gapped right and wasn't fouled. Fired good and strong even when truck wouldn't start before or after I checked it.

I did read (either here or someplace else, can't remember) about this issue being associated with a low oil pressure when cold problem, that it may cause injectors not to work. Is this possible? Also a friend told me about a cold start valve but wasn't sure if my model had this or not. I've never even heard of it.

I don't have a garage, working in my yard in the cold so I'm trying to avoid any major tear downs if possible. Anyone got any new ideas or simple things I can try here before I break down and spend a fortune on a mechanic?

Thanks in advance for any advice and sorry for the repeat thread!

Check that year and model and engine size.

Let half of what people tell you go in one ear and out the other.
4.3 engine you need 65 lbs of pressure for injectors to squirt on a cold start.
60 is 5 lbs low specs is 60/66.

Make sure engine is cranking good.
Check for good hot blue spark to more than one spark plug.
Is security light going out key on?
How many mile on it and last tune up?

As a start aid and for checking for fuel delivery problem spray some carb cleaner into the intake and see if it will fire on it.
But never use starting fluid.
Let us know about spark and security light and engine turning over and if caarb cleaner into intake helps.

Lightbulb Re: '05 Jimmy Long Crank but Won't Start Cold

Well, good to know. My "mechanic" told me 60 was fine. As for engine cranking good, it cranks like crazy when I keep the block heater plugged in all night. Doesn't crank well if I don't, which is what I originally thought the problem was. Started plugging it in and now it whirls but doesn't catch. Security light is out. I did check that but forgot to mention it in my post. I had a friend who had a problem like that last year. There are 65,000 kilometers on it (I'm in Canada), works out to about 29,550 miles. It was my mother's truck, she doesn't drive much. I put plugs and wires, air filter and such on it about 14 months ago but nothing but oil changes since then. Haven't had a problem with it really. I mean, it's barely been used and rarely winter driven till I got it. Maybe it was doing this before but mom never would've known, she doesn't do the winter driving thing. Last winter it was hurting for a battery and I replaced that. Don't have any carb cleaner here but I'm going to town (if it starts!) tomorrow, I'll get some. I live about 45 minutes out of town (thus the 4 wheel dig). I'll post my results as soon as I can. I'll check a couple other plugs tomorrow too if it's not too friggin cold to stand outside and do it. Thanks for the advice, keep it coming!

Re: '05 Jimmy Long Crank but Won't Start Cold

You are welcome.
What size engine?
If 4.3 60/66 is fuel pressure specs.
Should have 65 cold cranking.
But be sure to check for good hot blue spark top more than one spark plug.
I do not find a 05 jimmy listed in repair book.
