Brabham's BT-42 F-1

Ok.... so this is not my specialty.... its a 1973 F1 Brabham's BT-42 that was driven by Carlos Reutimann. This is a multimedia kit with Resin, white metal, PE, like a MFH kit from Orange House Models. Ugly car but hopefully I will get into it. Plus the pay is good!!

Here we go....

Carlos getting it done in 73' at silverstone......



Here is the raw resin body, scoop and wings that are white metal. Pretty clean casting but very much like a brick!



Once the resin was cleaned up I shot it all with plastikote Grey primer. Minor flaws will be repaired, and reprimed before white paint is applied..



thats all for now... and I am going with a dark backround for the most part in my photos now!

Superb car, some think they are ugly..I love 'em, the higher the airbox the better..hehe
I'm sure I have some footage of that race '73 at Silverstone, apart from Stewart in the Tyrrell the sexy JPS Lotus 73 is on screen most of the time, I'll have a look though.

How big does this model finish up at?

The model is 1/20 scale. Sorry I did not mention that and I hope you didnt take offense to my comment. I guess by today's standards its definitely "Different"

Dave, no offense taken, I can see why people dislike them, for me '70 to 76 had the most amazing aray of designs, by todays standards the car shape has I think come to an end (IMHO), saying that this years F1 cars to me are ugly, those small rear wings and oversized front wings..mmmm

Good luck on the build, I watch with great interest.

Hehehehe but I bet you guys like Postlethwaite, Barnard, Murray (to a certain extent), the early Tyrell designer (can't remember his name), Chapman would have all loved to have the technology available now, back then. Even some of the pioneering Cad-Cam stuff used in the mid-late 80's. Still, those 70's designs is part of what made F1 interesting & exciting. They were only looking tenths of a sec improvement - how long before we start seeing 10,000ths of a sec?

the brabhams is in paint. PPG Basecoat white and Dupont clear.......




After a light polish I carefully masked off the bottom and painted it krylon semi flat black.



Then I applied the decals which was quite an experience.. they leave alot to be desired... brittle, not really responsive to decal softeners.. but I got them all on. I brushed on some micro gloss to seal them in.




Now I can start building it!!

I kinda like these quirky 70's designs myself, and in fact this car looks great. Modern F1 is too design restricted...

..Argentine Meat huh....is that a sponsor or a nickname for the driver!!

Got lots done today to the powerplant. Lets just say the white metal in this kit leaves little to be desired. It took lots of tweaking and swearing to get it to this stage. But all in all its a fine replica of the legendary Cosworth powerplant. The block was shot with Tamiya Acrylic gunmetal through the airbrush. The valve covers are shot with semi flat Krylon and the ford logos carefully scraped away to reveal the white metal beneath. Ignition wires are kit supplied. Only thing I added was a Trans cooler line using detailmaster #3 hardware and line. The exhaust was painted flat black and dusted with white chalk for that heated look that black coated exhaust gets....




The engine definitely is making this car look cooler!!

This kit sounds like a challenge but you're doing an excellent job. I've always liked '70s Brabhams and that sponsor name had me laughing uncontrollably!

Great model you are building. Exellent paint work.

A little niggle though that won't be too tough to save. You have to turn the ignition box 180 degrees. The wires exits to the rear and not at the front of the engine. Look at any picture of a cosworth engine where you can see in which end the chassis is.

Your absolutely right FLemming! I guess it pays to not follow the directions so closely!!!
